Google's Mishaal Rahman has revealed early details about Android 17's upcoming foldable gaming mode. The feature splits a foldable phone's screen during gameplay, placing the game on the top half and a full virtual gamepad on the bottom. This addresses the challenge of gaming on larger foldable displays without requiring physical controllers.

The virtual gamepad includes standard controls like X, Y, A, and B buttons, plus L1, L2, R1, and R2 triggers, analog sticks, and a D-pad. Users can customize the layout to resemble PlayStation or Xbox controller configurations, and adjust the gamepad size. Haptic feedback support adds tactile response for supported games.

Rahman notes developers won't need major modifications for this feature to work, though split-screen optimization remains important. The mode targets games that already support physical controllers, making titles like Wuthering Waves and Zenless Zone Zero more playable on foldables. Android 17 launched in mid-June with security-focused updates rather than flashy new features.

This represents Google's push to make foldable phones more appealing for mobile gaming. While touch controls work for many titles, certain games benefit significantly from physical-style button layouts. The foldable gaming mode could differentiate Android foldables in a competitive market where gaming capabilities increasingly influence purchasing decisions.
