Google Phases Out Phone Actions in Smart Home Automations: User Backlash Expected

Google has notified Nest device users that phone-related actions in smart home automations will be discontinued by early May, sparking frustration among users who rely on these features daily. The company clarified that only automations involving phone-specific tasks—such as checking battery levels, toggling Do Not Disturb mode, or adjusting phone volume—will be affected, while home-centric automations remain intact. However, users on Reddit and the Google Nest Community forum have expressed disappointment, with one noting the feature is used "multiple times a day."

The removal comes as Google introduces "Continued Conversations" to Gemini for Home, a new feature allowing follow-up voice commands without repeating requests. This update, rolled out in Early Preview, aims to streamline interactions but does little to address the loss of phone-based automations. Meanwhile, Nest Hub users reported a separate issue where devices incorrectly reference times (e.g., stating "3 am" when setting a 3 pm alarm), though alarms still trigger accurately.

Google’s Community Specialists confirmed the change isn’t a full automation overhaul but a targeted reduction in phone-centric functionality. No official workaround has been announced, leaving users uncertain about alternatives. The shift highlights ongoing tensions between convenience and platform consolidation in smart home ecosystems.

Critics argue Google’s lack of transparency around replacements undermines trust. As the May 1 deadline approaches, affected users face disrupted routines, emphasizing the need for clearer communication and transitional support from the tech giant.
