The risky Sunbird app, which aims to let Android users participate in iMessage conversations, has reappeared despite Apple's introduction of RCS support. Previously, Sunbird functioned as an Android app offering iMessage access with significant security flaws. After a hiatus, it returned in 2024, claiming to have fixed its security issues, but continued to route user data through its servers.

Now in "open beta," Sunbird offers in-app purchases ranging from $2.99 to $24.99, likely as monthly or annual subscriptions. The developer, Sunbird Messaging, argues that Apple's RCS support is insufficient, particularly for group chats, and that Sunbird restores full functionality for Android users. They cite statistics suggesting a significant percentage of Android users experience issues with cross-platform messaging and consider switching to iPhone due to these incompatibilities.

However, the article points out that Sunbird addresses a problem largely confined to the US, as WhatsApp is the dominant messaging app globally. Furthermore, the app itself admits to occasional installation issues. Despite these concerns, Sunbird claims over 181,000 people signed up for its closed beta and plans to integrate AI features in 2026 to summarize messages and assist with drafting replies. The app remains unrecommended due to its third-party data exposure and questionable necessity.
