YouTube Music launches split-view Now Playing redesign

YouTube Music is rolling out a split‑view redesign for its Now Playing screen. The update appears in version 9.15 on iOS and 9.14 on Android, swapping the thin progress line for a thicker, touch‑responsive bar and swapping the text “Song/Video” toggle for icons. Cover art grows slightly, the control carousel remains, and readability improves on larger screens.

Beyond cosmetics, the redesign introduces a dual‑pane layout that shows the upcoming queue beneath the main controls. Swiping anywhere on the player lifts it halfway, revealing the Up Next list; a second swipe restores the previous fullscreen view. Lyrics and Related sections have been relocated—Lyrics now follows the thumbs‑up/down capsule, and Related opens via a chevron on the song title.

The change is server‑side; forcing the app to stop or dismissing the queue triggers the new UI. By consolidating navigation and enlarging visual cues, YouTube Music aims to make media browsing feel more tactile on mobile devices. Early adopters can already test the split‑view layout, confirming the update works across the supported versions. Users report smoother transitions between tracks and quicker access to the queue.
