Threads launches web DMs, group chat still pending

Last July Threads split its direct messages from Instagram, finally giving the feature its own home. Today the service confirmed that web DMs are entering a limited roll‑out. Early testers will see a paper‑plane icon in the left menu, opening an inbox for one‑on‑one chats while group messaging is promised later. The test will start in a few undisclosed regions.

The web client mirrors the mobile app’s privacy controls, letting users decide who can message them and offering block, restrict or report options. A share button now lets members forward posts directly into a conversation by tapping “Send to.” Meta says the feature will soon expand to most countries for users eighteen and older, though the rollout schedule remains vague.

By decoupling DMs from Instagram and adding a browser interface, Threads closes a long‑standing gap that has forced power users onto the main app for private chats. With group threads slated for a future update, the move could boost engagement among younger audiences who prefer desktop messaging, making Threads a more complete competitor to established chat platforms and retain users across devices.
