Sonos Launches Live Activities on iPhone

The Sonos app for iPhone has received its much-anticipated update with Live Activities. This new feature brings convenience by offering Lock Screen playback controls directly from the Sonos app. Previously, Sonos users experienced significant changes through multiple app redesigns that sparked controversy and even led to a fired CEO. In response, the company has begun reintroducing previously removed features. Live Activities address a long-standing user request for direct control over audio playback.

Once enabled, these activities appear immediately after starting music and automatically close the app. The display shows the current listening room or group. When playback ceases, the activity expires after 15 minutes. Viewing requires Face ID or passcode authorization due to security measures. While accessible from the Lock Screen, certain limitations exist across platforms—the feature works in Car Play and Apple Watch but with restricted functionality. Currently, album artwork cannot be integrated into these activities, though alternative enhancement approaches are under exploration. Users who prefer external initiation methods can continue using standard playback options like Air Play or Bluetooth.
