Rebuilding a Smart Home From Scratch: Lessons Learned in New Apartment

After a two-year home buying journey, I'm rebuilding my smart home setup in a new apartment with hard-won lessons from my previous installation. The move meant leaving behind all previous smart home equipment, including floor-to-ceiling blinds that proved impractical. This time I'm opting for linen blackout curtains with SwitchBot automation for a softer aesthetic while maintaining morning light control.

The kitchen presented an unexpected challenge when I discovered the light switch sits outside the room itself. My solution involves Philips Hue smart switches and presence detectors to automatically illuminate the space. Unlike basic motion detectors that fail to recognize stationary occupants, these newer sensors detect presence even when someone isn't moving—particularly helpful for bathroom lighting that would otherwise shut off during relaxing baths.

Audio setup required adaptation for the smaller floor plan. I arranged three original HomePods in a triangular configuration around the living room and desk area, creating effective surround sound coverage throughout the space. For lighting, I chose Hue Gradient strips beneath storage units for multicolor flexibility, plus a Signature Gradient floor lamp that delivers vertical color effects.

The rebuild process revealed practical considerations often overlooked in smart home planning. Position of switches, room size, and daily routines all influence which technologies actually improve life versus creating new frustrations. My priority list now includes Apple Key-compatible smart locks and finishing touches like wood paneling behind the desk before adding accent lighting.
