New Jersey AG fines Apple $150K for pricing violations

Apple agreed to a $150,000 civil penalty with New Jersey after the state’s consumer‑protection division concluded the company repeatedly violated the Merchandise Pricing Act. Attorney General Matthew J. Platkin announced the settlement, calling it the division’s largest ever under the law, and demanded immediate changes to in‑store pricing practices.

The probe stemmed from a 2017 consent order that forced Apple to display continuous price information for iPhones, iPads, Macs, and accessories. A recent reinspection of eleven New Jersey stores found missing price tags on display tables and absent refund notices near cash registers and entrances, breaching the original agreement.

Under the settlement, Apple must label every item with a visible price tag, a brief on‑screen display, or a sign placed close to the product, and it may not require shoppers to interact with a device to learn the cost. Clear refund policies must also appear at registers or store entrances, prompting close monitoring of compliance in the coming months.
