Smartphone loyalty hits record high as iPhone dominance grows

Smartphone shoppers are sticking with their chosen ecosystem more than ever, a trend uncovered by used‑device reseller SellCell. The survey of over 5,000 U.S. users shows iPhone devotion climbing to 96.4%, while Android loyalty sits at 86.4%. Fewer owners are swapping platforms, and those who do are still more likely to move from Android to iPhone than the reverse. Even longtime Android fans cite brand perks as a reason to stay.

iPhone owners now favor upgrading within Apple’s lineup, but Android fans have also tightened their ranks. Samsung’s share of loyal Android users surged from 74% in 2021 to a striking 90.1% today, helping push overall Android fidelity from 65.2% five years ago to the current 86.4%. The gap between the two camps widens as brand stickiness hits record highs. Loyalty spikes also translate into higher resale values across both camps.

Price and perceived value remain the top reasons shoppers stay put, with technology features a close second. As hardware differentials fade, manufacturers scramble for new hooks, like foldable screens where Samsung currently leads. Apple’s rumored iPhone Fold could finally give the ecosystem a fresh differentiator, but for now consumer choice is driven more by cost than innovation. Until a breakthrough arrives, incremental upgrades will dominate purchase cycles.
