Google Maps is rolling out its biggest driving update in over a decade with Immersive Navigation, a complete redesign of the navigation interface. The update introduces vivid 3D visuals that reflect real-world buildings, overpasses, and terrain around you. Google is using Gemini AI to analyze fresh Street View and aerial imagery, providing accurate views of landmarks and medians along your route.

Driving guidance gets a major overhaul with highlighted lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help you navigate turns and merges confidently. Voice prompts now sound more natural, telling you to "go past this exit and take the next one" rather than just giving street names. The system also shows broader route views with smart zooms and transparent buildings before tricky maneuvers.

Before starting your trip, you can preview destinations with Street View imagery and get parking recommendations. As you approach, Maps highlights building entrances, nearby parking, and which side of the street to be on. The update also displays tradeoffs for alternate routes, like longer trips with less traffic versus faster toll routes, and alerts you to real-time disruptions from Google's community of drivers who contribute over 10 million reports daily.
