Google is rolling out a major overhaul of its Maps app with Immersive Navigation, a 3D-enhanced driving experience designed to eliminate guesswork on the road. Announced on March 12, this update represents the biggest Maps redesign in a decade, featuring vibrant 3D buildings, overpasses, and terrain that automatically highlight key road details during navigation.

Powered by Gemini AI, the new interface includes smart zooms, transparent buildings, and enhanced voice guidance that sounds more natural and clear. The system proactively alerts drivers to traffic changes, construction, and crashes while suggesting alternative routes. Before even starting a trip, users can leverage Street View to scout parking near their destination, and the app will automatically highlight building entrances as they approach.

Alongside Immersive Navigation, Google is launching Ask Maps, a conversational AI assistant that helps users find places to exercise, dine, or hang out with friends. The feature creates customized maps based on personalized data from your search and save history. Ask Maps is rolling out this week on Android and iOS in the U.S., with desktop coming soon. The combination of these updates positions Google Maps to compete more directly with emerging navigation apps that offer richer, more intuitive driving experiences.
