CarPlay Ultra Rollout Expands Beyond Aston Martin to Mainstream Brands

Apple's next-generation CarPlay Ultra, first teased at WWDC 2022, remains largely exclusive to Aston Martin vehicles in North America. The platform's rollout has been slower than initially promised, with Apple missing its 2024 timeline for broader adoption. Several automakers have actually withdrawn their support, creating uncertainty around the feature's future availability.

The current lineup of committed partners includes Acura, Ford, Genesis, Honda, Hyundai, Infiniti, Jaguar, Kia, Land Rover, Lincoln, Nissan, and Porsche. However, major brands like Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Volvo, Polestar, and Renault have abandoned plans to integrate the system. This exodus represents a significant setback for Apple's automotive ambitions.

Hyundai's upcoming IONIQ 3 EV could serve as a more accessible entry point for CarPlay Ultra, priced around $33,700 compared to Aston Martin's six-figure vehicles. Ford CEO Jim Farley acknowledged considering the platform but criticized its "round 1" execution, suggesting Apple still needs to refine the experience before wider adoption.

The fragmented rollout and mixed automaker enthusiasm highlight challenges Apple faces in the automotive space. With only luxury brands currently offering the feature, mainstream consumers may wait years before accessing CarPlay Ultra in affordable vehicles.
