The University of Texas at Austin is set to become the largest U.S. university to integrate digital IDs into Apple Wallet, launching next academic year. This major expansion, confirmed in a university press release, will allow students to access campus buildings, make dining purchases, enter events, and use library services using their iPhones or Apple Watches. The rollout begins during the 2027-2028 school year, following a phased approach that includes feedback collection and design phases led by Enterprise Technology. 55,000 students will transition from physical IDs to digital credentials, which offer enhanced security and cost savings compared to traditional cards. Unlike physical IDs, digital credentials tied to personal devices reduce the risk of loss or sharing, as they can be updated in real-time. The university expects this shift to eliminate student fees for lost IDs and reduce production costs. Apple Wallet first supported student cards in 2019 with iOS 12, and this partnership represents a significant scaling of that platform.

Student Government spearheaded the initiative, responding to years of student demand for digital identification. Thomas and Chu, representing the Student Government, emphasized the collaborative effort with university administrators to fulfill this long-standing student vision. The digital IDs will be distributed via the MyUT portal and can be added to both Apple Wallet and Android Wallet, ensuring a smooth transition alongside physical IDs during the initial phase. This approach allows the Longhorn community to adapt gradually to the new system while maintaining access through existing physical cards.

The university highlights the practical benefits: digital IDs are more cost-effective long-term, eliminating replacement fees for lost cards and reducing card production expenses.
