Texas pushes Apple Wallet Digital ID into age verification

Apple rolled out age‑related restrictions in Texas, activating its Wallet app’s Digital ID as a verification tool. New law requires any Apple Account created in Texas on or after June 4, 2026 to confirm the user’s age. Adults must prove they are 18+, while minors must belong to a Family Sharing group, making the ID feature immediately relevant to meet state law requirements.

The move builds on Apple’s rollout of Digital ID last fall, initially limited to TSA checkpoints. Recent expansions let the ID serve as age verification in select global markets, and Texas becomes the first U.S. state to adopt the approach for local businesses and government agencies. Users create the ID by adding a driver’s license or passport in Wallet, then authenticating with a US passport.

By tying account creation to a government‑backed credential, Apple offers a privacy‑friendly alternative to third‑party age checks. Retailers and service providers in Texas can now rely on the Wallet verification, potentially reducing friction for purchases restricted to adults. The policy signals that state‑level ID legislation may drive broader adoption of Digital ID across the United States in consumer apps and online platforms.
