Apple makes Pages, Numbers, Keynote, Freeform freemium

Apple is turning its core productivity suite into a freemium offering. While Pages, Numbers, Keynote, and Freeform will still let users create documents, spreadsheets, presentations, and collaborative canvases at no cost, new AI‑driven features and premium templates will sit behind a subscription wall. The move ends a decades‑long tradition of providing these apps free on every Mac, iPhone, and iPad.

Analysts see the shift as a response to growing pressure from Microsoft and Google, whose cloud‑based services already monetize advanced capabilities. By bundling generative AI tools with exclusive content, Apple hopes to tap the same revenue stream that powers its other services like Apple Music and iCloud. Existing users can continue with the basic toolset, but power users and enterprises may feel compelled to upgrade for the latest productivity boosts.

The change rolls out later this year, and Apple will likely integrate the subscription into its broader services bundle, giving customers a single bill for multiple apps.
