Apple's image generation capabilities in Genmoji and Image Playground are slated for substantial visual quality improvements in iOS 27. Mark Gurman reports that current models deliver underwhelming results, particularly Image Playground which launched with noticeably poor fidelity compared to competing AI image generators.

The weak performance traces to on-device processing limitations, though this doesn't excuse the subpar output. When these features arrived in iOS 18.2, users encountered disappointing results that failed to match established image generation platforms. Apple now appears to be addressing these shortcomings with significant model upgrades scheduled for the next major release.

Beyond internal improvements, Apple will expand third-party AI model support within Image Playground. While ChatGPT integration currently exists, the company plans to add alternatives including Google's Nano Banana models. This diversification gives users more creative options while reducing dependence on single AI providers.

These upgrades acknowledge that basic functionality alone isn't sufficient in the competitive AI space. With major tech companies racing to deliver compelling generative features, poor-quality tools risk damaging both user experience and platform reputation. The improvements arrive as Apple faces increasing pressure to match rival AI capabilities.
