Apple Extends Free 4K Upgrades to TV Shows

Apple has begun rolling out free 4K upgrades for previously purchased TV shows in the Apple TV app, extending a policy it introduced for movies in 2017 alongside the first Apple TV 4K.

The expansion was spotted by industry observer Sigmund Judge, who compiled a list of titles now available in 4K at no extra cost. The initial batch includes Mad Men, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, RuPaul's Drag Race UK, The Twilight Zone reboot, The Hunting Wives, Blossoms Shanghai, Ice Airport Alaska, The Wingfeather Saga, and Aftertaste.

Customers who bought these shows through the iTunes Store or Apple TV app can now stream them in 4K without repurchasing. Apple has not announced a formal rollout schedule, but the list is expected to grow as licensing agreements are updated.

The move closes a long-standing gap between movie and TV show upgrade policies, giving Apple's digital library parity with competitors like Vudu and Movies Anywhere that have offered similar TV show upgrades for years. For consumers, it reinforces the value of Apple's ecosystem — purchased content improves over time without recurring fees.
