Apple details why Siri overhaul lagged in iOS 27

Apple revealed that the dramatic Siri upgrade in iOS 27 stemmed from a full reconstruction rather than an incremental tweak. At a post‑WWDC tech talk, senior Siri lead Mike Rockwell explained the team scrapped an earlier version that added tool‑calling but fell short of their vision. The decision forced a ground‑up rebuild on top of newer AI models, delaying the rollout.

Rockwell said the new Siri is now a native, multimodal assistant that runs across iPhone, iPad, Mac, Watch, Vision Pro, CarPlay and AirPods, delivering a consistent experience and privacy baked in from the start. This unified approach replaces the fragmented implementations of past releases and aligns with Apple’s broader "Apple Intelligence" strategy unveiled by Craig Federighi and Amar Subramanya.

The overhaul means users finally get a truly capable conversational AI that can understand text, images and contextual cues across devices. By choosing depth over speed, Apple positioned Siri to compete more directly with third‑party assistants, setting a new baseline for on‑device intelligence in its ecosystem.
