Apple Reference Image, introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, offers a trustworthy guarantee that a photo is a real capture and not AI-generated. The feature boots the camera sensor into a specialized reference mode that instructs the sensor to cryptographically sign pixel data immediately after capture. This prevents the sensor firmware from modifying the data, creating a "secure digital negative" stored on-device alongside a standard editable photo.

When users choose to verify the image, it is sent unprocessed to Private Cloud Compute. Apple claims this system resists data injection attacks, compromised operating systems, hardware attacks, and cryptographic attacks, featuring quantum-secure defenses. A revocation option exists if the system is breached.

To protect photographer confidentiality, the system avoids public credentials and prevents association between photos taken by the same sensor. Apple Reference Image is opt-in and limited to the Main camera sensor. More details are available in Apple's full blog post.
