iOS 27 Beta 5 introduces references to a new feature allowing Apple to authenticate iPhone photos. As AI-generated images and video grow in realism, distinguishing genuine photos from disinformation becomes harder. While the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA) aims to identify modifications, Apple is developing its own Apple Reference Image (ARI) feature.

Anyone with ARI enabled can upload photos to an Apple server for verification. This is primarily intended for journalists and legal professionals needing independent proof of authenticity. While ARI may have limited usage initially, such features will become increasingly common as AI usage grows. The EU has already announced a code of practice on the transparency of AI-generated content to help people identify non-real content.

Currently a voluntary initiative, the landscape is shifting. Notably, Anthropic has already announced support for these measures, applying digital watermarking to both text and images. If these requirements become mandatory globally, Apple may need to apply similar standards to tools like Siri AI rewrites.
