Apple is asking the UK Supreme Court to overturn a $502 million patent licensing ruling in its long-running dispute with Optis Wireless. The Texas-based company alleges that iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch models with LTE support infringe on 4G/LTE networking patents. This latest appeal focuses on FRAND terms and payment amounts rather than infringement itself.

The dispute began in 2019 across US and UK courts, with both sides trading victories through multiple appeals. While a recent US jury ruled in Apple's favor, Optis intends to pursue further review there. Meanwhile, the UK case centers on how much Apple should pay for patented technology under fair licensing terms.

In 2023, the High Court initially ordered Apple to pay $56 million, but the Court of Appeal increased this to $502 million last year. The higher court used Optis's Google licensing deal as a baseline and included royalties dating back to 2013, rejecting the High Court's six-year limitation. Apple argues this methodology was flawed and "arbitrary."

Qualcomm opposes Apple's appeal, claiming it undermines standard licensing practices and could reduce incentives for technology development. The Supreme Court's five-judge panel will hear arguments over three days, potentially reshaping how global patent licensing disputes are resolved.
