AirPods Max 2 Teardown Reveals Minimal Changes

iFixit has completed its teardown of Apple's new AirPods Max 2, revealing a design that remains largely unchanged from the first generation. The repair experts used their existing teardown manual for the original model and found the internal components nearly identical, making disassembly and repair processes essentially the same.

The lack of significant internal changes comes despite Apple's recent push toward more repair-friendly products and reports of condensation issues with the first-generation model. While the new H2 chip represents the main hardware upgrade, iFixit notes that Apple continues to rely heavily on adhesive throughout the earcups, making repairs challenging and potentially damaging internal cables during disassembly.

Despite a relatively modular internal layout, Apple still does not provide replacement parts or repair manuals for the AirPods Max lineup. The teardown found that while the USB-C port is replaceable, accessing it requires removing much of the internal assembly, making what should be a straightforward repair unnecessarily complex. This approach stands in contrast to Apple's more repairable recent products and suggests the company has not fully embraced the right-to-repair movement for its premium over-ear headphones.
