India is aiming to attract $200 billion in data center investments as it positions itself as a global artificial intelligence hub, according to Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. The ambitious push comes as tech giants including Google, Microsoft, and Amazon commit billions to expand AI infrastructure in the South Asian nation.

Google recently announced a $15 billion investment plan to establish its first AI hub in India, followed by Microsoft's $17.5 billion commitment for cloud and AI infrastructure. Amazon has pledged $35 billion by 2030 to expand its AI-driven digitization efforts. These investments form part of the broader $200 billion pipeline that New Delhi hopes will flow in as the country scales up its digital transformation ambitions.

The government has introduced a long-term tax holiday for data centers and operationalized a shared computing facility with over 38,000 GPUs to provide startups and researchers access to high-end computing. India is also developing sovereign foundational AI models trained on Indian languages, with some models meeting global benchmarks and rivaling widely used large language models.
