The union representing auto workers in Canada, Unifor, states that Stellantis has indicated its intention to sell a factory located in the Toronto area. Lana Payne, president of Unifor, revealed that Stellantis informed the union this week about considering the closure and sale of the Brampton, Ontario plant.

This facility has been idle since 2024 for retooling to produce the next-generation Jeep Compass, scheduled to begin in early 2026. Both Canadian federal and provincial governments have invested hundreds of millions of dollars to modernize Stellantis's operations in Brampton and Windsor, Ontario.

Last year, Stellantis had announced plans to shift manufacturing to Illinois, partly due to pressure from then-President Trump to move operations to the U.S. Payne expressed deep disappointment, calling the potential sale a "gut punch" to the union and its members, and indicated the company intends to discuss a sale with another firm.
