German archaeologists have uncovered the wreckage of a British Short Stirling bomber that crashed near Hambach in 1943. The excavation team, led by specialist Tünde Kaszab-Olschewski, discovered human remains and aircraft parts at the site of the World War II crash. The bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire after attacking Remscheid on July 31, 1943.

Three crew members parachuted to safety, while four others remained missing until now. The discovery includes metal parts, bones, a shoe sole, uniform jacket remnants, and parachute accessories. Local historians from the Rhine/Moselle Air War History Working Group had been searching for the crash site for years before archaeologists began their excavation.

Remains will undergo DNA analysis to confirm identities of the missing crew members. The artifacts will be preserved at the LVR State Museum in Bonn and may be displayed at a planned documentation center on air warfare. The archaeologist described the find as deeply moving, emphasizing their desire to give the fallen soldiers a proper burial after 82 years.
