Archaeologists from the Saxony-Anhalt State Office for Heritage Management and Archaeology have uncovered a medieval erdstall tunnel system near Reinstedt, Germany. The discovery, announced in January 2026, was made during excavations at a Middle Neolithic burial site and revealed various artifacts including a horseshoe, fox skeleton, and small mammal bones.

The tunnel system, measuring between one and 1.25 meters in height with widths of 50 to 70 centimeters, features vaulted ceilings in some sections. Researchers also found a layer of charcoal in the lower levels, suggesting brief use as a light source, and a pile of stones that may have been used to seal the entrance. The site is located near the remains of a possible Bronze Age burial mound.

Despite thousands of similar tunnel systems being discovered across Europe, their original purpose remains hotly debated among researchers. Theories range from temporary hideouts and escape routes to symbolic tombs for ancestors awaiting the Final Judgment. The tunnels' locations near churches, cemeteries, and old farmhouses add further mystery to their intended use, with some scholars suggesting they may have served spiritual or ritual purposes during periods of medieval instability.
