A Wisconsin nurse was sentenced to 18 months in prison after admitting she fabricated a sexual assault claim against a patient she had sex with while working. Melissa Knutson, 30, pleaded no contest to misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer. Monroe County Judge Paul Curran called her actions "despicable" and an "embarrassment to nurses everywhere" during sentencing.

Knutson had sexual contact with a drug court participant multiple times while employed at a Monroe County facility. After someone reported her to the Wisconsin Department of Safety and Professional Services, she falsely claimed the patient assaulted her. Police treated the accusation seriously until evidence proved she was lying. Knutson later acknowledged fabricating the claim to avoid consequences for her actions.

Monroe County District Attorney Kevin Croninger emphasized the "deep and significant" harm caused by Knutson's violation of patient trust. Her defense attorney argued Knutson was manipulated and threatened by the patient, who allegedly coerced her into the relationship. The case highlights the serious breach of professional ethics when healthcare workers exploit vulnerable patients, particularly those in addiction treatment programs.
