An Albuquerque woman who impersonated a nurse and nearly killed a hospice patient is on the run after failing to report to her court-ordered program. April Hernandez falsified documents to steal registered nurses' identities and illegally provided care, including administering a morphine overdose that nearly killed a patient.

Hernandez pleaded guilty last month to identity theft, fraud, abuse of a resident, and falsification of Medicaid documents. She received a one-year sentence in the Community Custody Program and was expected to turn herself in last Wednesday, but authorities have not located her.

While awaiting sentencing, Hernandez was arrested for shoplifting, adding to her legal troubles. KRQE News 13 attempted to contact her attorney for comment but has not received a response. The case highlights serious gaps in healthcare worker verification systems.
