The Trump administration is requiring all commercial truck and bus drivers to take their licensing tests in English, marking a significant expansion of safety enforcement efforts. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy announced the policy Friday, citing concerns about unqualified drivers on American roads.

Currently, many states allow CDL tests in multiple languages despite federal requirements for English proficiency. California previously offered tests in 20 languages, while Florida has already implemented English-only testing. Duffy emphasized that numerous states have hired third-party companies to administer tests, which aren't consistently enforcing English language standards.

This latest enforcement push follows aggressive actions against substandard driving schools, with 557 schools ordered to close for failing basic safety requirements. The crackdown intensified after a fatal crash in Florida involving an unauthorized immigrant driver who made an illegal U-turn, killing three people. Additional fatal crashes, including one in Indiana that killed four members of an Amish community, have heightened safety concerns.

The administration is also targeting fraudulent trucking companies known as 'chameleon carriers' that evade enforcement by repeatedly registering under different names. Current registration requires only a $300 fee and proof of insurance, with audits sometimes conducted virtually years later. Officials plan to strengthen registration requirements and increase spot checks while ensuring electronic logging devices remain accurate.
