Trump Plans to Replace Immigrant Truck Drivers With Veterans

President Trump announced plans to strip commercial driver's licenses from undocumented immigrants and automatically transfer eligibility to military veterans. Speaking at a defense summit in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, Trump claimed immigrant drivers are "killing a lot of people," cannot read signs, and are often impaired. "We're going to replace them with proud American veterans," he said, adding that veterans with military truck-driving experience would be automatically eligible for commercial licenses.

The initiative follows the death of Pennsylvania State Trooper Michael Pahira Jr., struck and killed by an undocumented immigrant, Michael Bon, driving a semi-truck. Bon faces vehicular homicide charges, and ICE filed a detainer. Roughly 200,000 immigrants had their commercial licenses revoked in March, barring them from driving semis, buses, and tractor-trailers despite passing required tests.

Critics question whether military vehicle experience adequately prepares veterans for commercial driving, warning that granting licenses to untested drivers could reduce road safety. The administration insists the policy prioritizes American workers and public safety.
