Regina Ann Santos-Aviles, 35, a staffer for U.S. Rep. Tony Gonzales, set herself on fire in September 2025 after discovering her estranged husband's infidelity with her best friend. Newly released police records detail her final moments, including a 911 call where she screamed in pain and begged for help.

Santos-Aviles, director of Gonzales' regional office in Uvalde, had previously been involved in an affair with the congressman in 2024. The liaison became public during the March 3 Republican primary in Texas' 23rd Congressional District, where Gonzales is seeking a fourth term. The controversy intensified after Santos-Aviles' death.

Security footage captured her pouring gasoline on herself and igniting the flames with a lighter. Before the act, she texted her husband's friend, referring to him as "Baller," saying she was setting herself on fire. She also sent a video showing herself pouring gasoline. Santos-Aviles died the following morning at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio.
