Texas Rep. Tony Gonzales, R-Texas, alleges political blackmail after a report of an alleged affair with a former staffer who died by suicide in 2025. Gonzales accused attorney Robert Barrera, representing her husband Adrian Aviles, of seeking a $300,000 settlement under the Congressional Accountability Act.

Gonzales posted a partial email screenshot on X, stating, "I WILL NOT BE BLACKMAILED," and condemned efforts to profit from the tragedy. Barrera denied blackmail, calling the claims "ridiculous," and emphasized Gonzales’ alleged retaliation against the staffer, including restricted job duties. Gonzales’ campaign denied involvement in the matter, while his wife’s family pursued legal action for harassment.

The congressman, endorsed by Donald Trump, faces a primary challenge from Brandon Herrera, who demanded his resignation.
