South Carolina health inspectors uncovered serious violations at Midlands restaurants during February inspections, with five establishments receiving the lowest possible C grade. BJ Country Buffet in Aiken faced criticism for advertising frozen swai fish as catfish while workers handled food without proper handwashing. Captain D's in Kershaw showed roach activity and improper food storage, though they improved to an A grade after a follow-up inspection.

Shealy's PDQ Retro in Lexington received a particularly low score of 64 for employees handling trash without changing gloves, rodent droppings, and storing expired food items. The restaurant had exceeded its septic tank capacity by more than double its approved limit. China King in Lexington also received a C grade for handling raw and ready-to-eat foods without proper separation, though they eventually improved to an A.

These health violations represent significant business risks beyond regulatory penalties. Restaurants face potential customer loss, negative publicity, and possible closure orders. Cynthia Soul Food in Richland still requires a follow-up inspection after inspectors found improper handwashing, unlabeled chemicals, and dirty equipment. The inspections demonstrate how quickly consumer trust can erode when basic food safety protocols are neglected.
