Almost 1.6 million dozen eggs have been upgraded to the highest‑risk Class I recall by the FDA after Salmonella contamination was detected. The Aug. 12 reclassification follows a July recall of nearly 20 million eggs and a growing outbreak that has sickened at least 98 people and hospitalized 26 across 17 states between late 2025 and June 2026. The problem was identified by Midwest Poultry Services through environmental monitoring at its Texas farms, which stopped distributing fresh eggs on July 22.

The recalled white and brown cage‑free cartons bear codes P‑1950 or 0840962 with a Julian date of 157‑184 and best‑by dates through Aug. 17. They were sold at Kroger in Texas and Louisiana, Brookshire Grocery in six additional Southern states, and smaller retailers, as well as foodservice outlets in Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana.
