Ontario County Faces Oak Wilt Outbreak: Towns Under Quarantine to Stem Spread

Ontario County has implemented a statewide quarantine after detecting oak wilt disease in multiple towns, including South Bristol, Middlesex, and Italy. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) confirmed infections on both public and private lands, prompting restrictions on oak wood movement to prevent fungal spore transmission. Infected trees in the High Tor Wildlife Management Area were removed, and stumps treated with herbicide to halt root system spread, a critical step in containing the outbreak.

The disease, caused by a fungus blocking water-conducting vessels in oak trees, kills red oaks within weeks. Spread occurs via interconnected root systems and beetles carrying spores from fungal mats. Human activity, particularly transporting untreated oak firewood, exacerbates the issue. Quarantine rules now ban oak logs and branches under 29 inches unless chipped to one inch or smaller, a measure DEC officials emphasize to protect forests vital to local economies and ecosystems.

This marks the second major outbreak in New York, following a decade-long Glenville infection (2008–2018) that saw 203 trees removed. Officials plan five years of aerial monitoring in affected areas, using lessons from past efforts. Meanwhile, Ontario County faces compounding threats: the spotted lanternfly and hemlock woolly adelgid already threaten regional agriculture and forests.

The DEC urges residents to report symptoms and avoid moving untreated oak materials. For updates, visit <https://dec.ny.gov/> or email [email protected]. With climate stressors rising, proactive forest management becomes increasingly urgent to safeguard biodiversity and economic stability.
