Michelangelo 'Rediscovery' Claims Stir Renaissance Art World

An independent researcher has claimed that a marble bust of Christ in a Roman church is an authentic Michelangelo, sending shockwaves through the Renaissance art community. Valentina Salerno's assertion that the sculpture in the Basilica of Sant'Agnese Fuori le Mura is by the Renaissance master has unsettled established experts who have long considered it anonymous.

Salerno's claims gained unusual attention due to initial Vatican interest and the upcoming 550th anniversary of Michelangelo's birth. The researcher, an actress with no art history credentials, published her findings on academia.edu and announced the discovery at a news conference. Her theory suggests several other works can now be attributed to Michelangelo based on documentary research, though leading experts have declined to comment.

Some scholars, including Washington University's William Wallace, acknowledge Salerno's methodology may be sound but dispute her conclusion about a hidden treasure trove of Michelangelo works. Wallace notes that since 2000, there have been 45 attributions to Michelangelo that ultimately faded from memory. The Culture Ministry and Vatican have remained cautious, with the Carabinieri's art squad declining to authenticate the bust while ensuring its protection. As debates continue, the art world watches to see whether this claim joins the long history of disputed Michelangelo attributions or represents a genuine rediscovery.
