The Rijksmuseum has authenticated a long-dismissed painting as an authentic Rembrandt van Rijn work after two years of advanced analysis. The 1633 painting, “Vision of Zacharias in the Temple,” was purchased by a private collector in 1961 when experts rejected it as a Rembrandt. The museum's confirmation came through high-tech scans and pigment analysis that matched the work to the Dutch master's known techniques.

Director Taco Dibbits described the discovery as “like finding a needle in a haystack,” noting that the museum regularly receives inquiries about potential Rembrandt works. The painting depicts the biblical story of Zacharias being visited by the Archangel Gabriel, with the priest's surprised expression highlighted by dramatic lighting. The analysis included macro X-ray fluorescence scans and wood panel dating that confirmed the materials were consistent with Rembrandt's work from that period.

The authenticated painting will join approximately 350 known Rembrandt works and is now on public display at the Rijksmuseum on long-term loan. Curator Jonathan Bikker said the discovery raises hopes that more lost Rembrandt works may exist. The museum emphasized that while they're not actively searching for new Rembrandt paintings, this authentication demonstrates the ongoing potential for art historical discoveries that can reshape our understanding of one of history's most celebrated artists.
