Joella's Hot Chicken has closed permanently in Lexington after operating for just over five years. The Hamburg location, at 2305 Sir Barton Way, ceased operations recently, with no immediate comment from the company. This marks the end of a challenging journey for the restaurant that managed to survive pandemic delays and reopen despite a fire in 2023.

The Louisville-based chain opened its second Lexington location in November 2020 after pandemic-related delays initially postponed its planned February 2020 opening. Known for spicy fried chicken and home-style sides, the restaurant featured unique spice levels from "Southern" to "Fire-In Da-Hole" hot. Despite its popularity, the location couldn't overcome the obstacles it faced.

This particular Joella's location closed on Sunday, while the chain's first Lexington restaurant on Cochran and Tates Creek remains operational. The Hamburg spot endured multiple setbacks since its November 2020 opening, including a fire that damaged the building's exterior in April 2023. No information has been released about what business might occupy the space next.
