EV vs Gas: New Study Shows EVs Cost Half as Much to Drive

A new study from education nonprofit Veloz reveals electric vehicles cost significantly less to operate than traditional gas cars, with EVs averaging just five cents per mile compared to 12 cents for internal combustion engines. The research highlights how home charging stations can further reduce costs, with a full charge for a 65-75 kilowatt-hour battery costing only $12.86 on average.

The cost advantage becomes even more pronounced for heavy users, who can recoup the higher purchase price of an EV within two years through fuel savings alone. This economic benefit has become a key factor driving the rapid adoption of electric vehicles across the United States. The study examined various scenarios and found that in nearly every case, EVs deliver stronger economic benefits than comparable gasoline vehicles.

These findings reinforce the growing economic case for electric vehicle adoption, particularly as charging infrastructure expands and electricity rates remain competitive. The data suggests that beyond environmental benefits, the financial advantages of EVs are becoming increasingly compelling for consumers considering their next vehicle purchase.
