Battery-electric vehicles reduce emissions 40 and 60 percent in most locations, with larger impacts in urban areas. Colder climates do not diminish overall benefits as much as assumed; even in North Dakota, a 50 percent fuel economy drop on frigid nights has minimal effect on annual emission savings. Driving habits matter as much as the local electricity mix.

On cost, EVs are competitive with combustion-engine vehicles in most US regions over their lifetime, even without tax credits. Where electricity is affordable, battery-electrics cost less than plug-in hybrids or gas cars. The holistic model weighs all factors — electricity mix, traffic density, travel distance, climate — equally. As grids decarbonize, spatial emission differences will narrow, but individual driver variations will persist.
