Consumer Reports has identified several hybrid vehicles with concerning reliability issues that could impact purchasing decisions. The 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid tops the list with below-average dependability ratings despite its $29,200 to $38,250 price tag. CR specifically criticized its built-in electronics, build quality, and recalled it for instrument panel display issues that could affect safety indicators.

The 2025 Toyota Corolla Hybrid represents a rare reliability stumble for Toyota, with subpar ratings for build quality and electrical accessories. The model has already faced a recall for power brake assist system failures that could increase stopping distances. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has recorded 37 manufacturer communications regarding various issues with this hybrid model.

Other problematic hybrids include the 2025 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid, which has struggled with battery issues and fluid leaks in three of its four years on the market, and the 2024 Kia Niro Plug-in Hybrid with extremely low rankings for brakes and build quality. The 2022 Honda Insight also makes the list despite its impressive 52 miles per gallon fuel economy. These reliability concerns are particularly significant given hybrid vehicles' higher price tags, which can cost drivers up to 20% more than their gas-powered counterparts.
