China's 2027 Ban on Yoke Steering Wheels

China is moving to ban yoke-style steering wheels starting January 1, 2027, citing significant safety concerns. The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) has approved draft regulations requiring impact testing at ten specific points on traditional steering wheels, points that don't exist on yoke designs. Tesla pioneered this design with its Model S and Model X refresh in 2021.

Chinese safety officials report that 46 percent of driver injuries originate from the steering mechanism itself. The yoke design provides less of a buffer zone than traditional wheels, increasing the risk of serious injury during crashes. This regulatory move follows China's recent banning of hidden electric door handles after multiple incidents, another technology largely popularized by Tesla. Several Chinese automakers had adopted yoke steering wheels after Tesla's introduction.

The ban represents a significant regulatory challenge for automakers who invested in yoke technology. While US officials haven't indicated similar restrictions, China's decision could influence other markets. Tesla continues offering yoke wheels in its soon-to-be-discontinued Model S and Model X, while the Lexus RZ also features the design with a new drive-by-wire system. The regulation highlights growing scrutiny of automotive innovations that prioritize aesthetics over proven safety.
