China is set to ban hidden door handles on all new cars, a first-of-its-kind regulation globally. This move, effective January 1, 2027, targets a design feature popularized by Tesla, but also adopted by other Chinese EV makers like Xiaomi and Aion. The ban stems from safety concerns regarding the handles' operability in accidents and emergencies.

The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology cited issues with exterior handle operation and the inability to open doors post-accident as the primary reasons. The new rules mandate mechanical release features for both interior and exterior handles, ensuring accessibility from various angles. This shift comes amid mounting scrutiny of the design, with past incidents involving trapped occupants.

This decision could affect Tesla’s sales in China, its second-largest market, and force the company to redesign its vehicles for the region. Other EV manufacturers will also need to adjust their designs to comply. The ban follows safety investigations and incidents where occupants were unable to exit vehicles due to handle malfunctions.

What remains to be seen is how quickly manufacturers will adapt and whether similar regulations will emerge in other markets. The move underscores the growing importance of vehicle safety in China and the potential for regulatory shifts to impact the global automotive industry. Further, this could lead to increased costs for manufacturers.
