Boebert Calls for Gonzales Resignation Amid Scandal

Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) demanded Tony Gonzales (R-TX) resign Monday after new text messages surfaced showing the congressman asked former staffer Regina Santos-Aviles to send a "sexy pic" before her suicide last September. The messages, obtained by 24sight News, revealed Gonzales fantasized about intimate encounters with Santos-Aviles.

Gonzales has repeatedly denied having an affair with Santos-Aviles, who died by self-immolation after her husband discovered the relationship. A former employee who described himself as Santos-Aviles's "best friend" told the _San Antonio Express-News_ she admitted to the affair and battled depression after being cut off by Gonzales. The congressman blamed his primary opponent Brandon Herrera for the allegations.

Boebert's demand carries significant weight given Republicans' razor-thin House majority of 217-213 with four vacancies. Speaker Mike Johnson already faces defections from members like Don Bacon and Thomas Massie who occasionally vote with Democrats. If Gonzales resigns, the GOP majority would shrink to 217-214, making it even harder to advance legislation and secure border policies that Gonzales claims to prioritize.
