Yen Consolidates; BOJ Rate Hike Outlook May Boost

The yen has steadied against other G‑10 and Asian currencies, yet a recent media report suggesting the BOJ could accelerate rate hikes has bolstered market sentiment.

Joseph Capurso of CBA notes that the report framed JPY weakness as an upside inflation risk. Consequently, market odds for a BOJ hike in October rose to 84%, up from 72% pre‑report.

Capurso adds that the post‑meeting conference is a key driver of yen strength next week if Gov. Ueda signals a likely policy rate increase soon. He stresses that any hint of tightening could lift the yen further.

At present, the dollar trades at 163.10 yen and the euro at 186.12 yen, according to LSEG data, showing little change amid the evolving expectations for Japanese monetary policy.
