Sir Peter Beck, founder of Rocket Lab, signed an $8bn deal last month to acquire US satellite operator Iridium, gaining its established network and spectrum — the “lifeblood of the mobile industry.” The purchase instantly places the New‑Zealand‑born launch company in direct competition with Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Jeff Bezos’s Blue Origin, both of which are expanding their Starlink and Amazon Leo constellations.

Beck describes Rocket Lab as the “plucky upstart” versus the deep‑pocketed giants, noting that buying Iridium “short‑cuts that by 10 to 20 years.” Analyst Luke Pearce of CCS Insight says the move creates “another credible LEO competitor alongside players such as SpaceX, Amazon Leo and AST Space Mobile.”

Rocket Lab reported $200mn revenue in the quarter to March, up 60 % year‑on‑year, and narrowed its net loss to $45mn. Valued at $40bn, it remains the largest company to emerge from New Zealand, launching most missions from the remote Māhia Peninsula while headquartered in California.
