Tommy Schaefer, convicted in the notorious Bali 'suitcase murder' case, was deported to the United States Tuesday after serving 11 years of an 18-year prison sentence. The Chicago man was found guilty of bludgeoning Sheila von Wiese-Mack to death in 2014 while vacationing with her daughter, Heather Mack, who was his then-girlfriend.

Von Wiese-Mack's battered body was discovered in a suitcase at the St. Regis Bali Resort. Prosecutors alleged the couple killed the 62-year-old Chicago socialite to access her $1.5 million trust fund. Schaefer's sentence was reduced for good behavior, and Indonesian authorities confirmed his deportation from Bali International Airport.

Back in the United States, Schaefer faces federal charges including conspiracy to kill someone in a foreign country and tampering with a victim. He is scheduled for an initial court appearance in Chicago Thursday. His prior attorney, Thomas Durkin, died last year, and it's unclear whether Schaefer has legal representation in the U.S. case.
