Gerhardt Konig, a 47-year-old anesthesiologist from Maui, was convicted on Wednesday of attempted manslaughter for the brutal attack on his wife, Arielle Konig, on a secluded Oahu hiking trail near Honolulu last year.

Prosecutors presented evidence that Konig attacked his wife, Arielle, on the morning of March 24, 2025, her 36th birthday, during a hike on the Pali Puka trail. He allegedly tried to shove her off a cliff, jabbed her with a syringe, and bludgeoned her with a lava rock before two hikers intervened and stopped the assault, as shown in photographs and body camera footage of her severe head and facial wounds.

During the weekslong trial in Hawaii's First Circuit Court, both Konigs testified. Arielle Konig denied an affair with a co-worker, testifying that her husband screamed he was "sick of what had become of their marriage" and that she was "done" as he pushed her. Gerhardt Konig claimed self-defense, stating his wife attacked him, grabbing his testicles and hitting him with a rock. He faces up to 20 years in prison when sentenced on August 13th, following a not guilty plea to second-degree attempted murder charges.
