Former MLB pitcher Dan Serafini was sentenced to life without parole for the 2021 ambush killings of his father-in-law Robert Spohr and the attempted murder of his mother-in-law Wendy Wood. The 51-year-old former baseball player targeted his in-laws at their Lake Tahoe home after lying in wait for five hours while they were out on their boat.

Prosecutors argued that financial disputes over a multi-million dollar inheritance motivated the attack. Serafini's lover Samantha Scott testified she dropped him off at the home on June 5, 2021, where he shot Spohr in the head and wounded Wood twice in the head and once in the shoulder. Wood died by suicide two years later after suffering debilitating injuries.

During sentencing, Serafini's sister-in-law Adrienne Spohr revealed the family had received millions from her wealthy parents, including funding a horse estate and paying off credit card debt. She accused Serafini of cashing a $200,000 check from his victim's account weeks after the shooting. Despite proclaiming his innocence and arguing there was no physical evidence linking him to the crime, the judge handed down consecutive sentences of life without parole and 25 years to life for burglary.
