2027 Silverado's New V-8 Engine Drives GM's Truck Bet

Chevrolet is preparing a major overhaul for its full-size Silverado pickup, due in 2027. The most significant change is the retirement of the current 5.3-liter V-8, replaced by a new 5.7-liter V-8 engine. This move follows a substantial $888 million investment in GM's Tonawanda propulsion plant. While exterior styling will evolve subtly, the cabin receives a major upgrade with a large, single-glass dashboard display.

This redesign is critical for General Motors. The Silverado is the nation's second-best-selling vehicle, moving 577,434 units in 2025, and full-size trucks are the company's profit cornerstone. The new truck will use an updated T1-2 platform, likely retaining a solid rear axle for capability. It will spawn variants including the GMC Sierra and GM's full-size SUVs, spreading development costs across a high-volume product family.

GM faces pressure to ensure the new V-8 is bulletproof, as the outgoing 6.2-liter engine suffered widespread reliability issues and a recall of nearly 600,000 vehicles. Competition with the Ford F-150 and Ram 1500 remains fierce, and the Sierra's premium positioning creates internal rivalry. With base WT trims expected near $40,000, the 2027 Silverado must deliver perceived value to maintain its dominant market share.
